How to Change the Nozzle of Your 3D Printer

3D printers are not the easiest machines to work with. They require a lot of knowledge and patience in order to get them running properly. These days, there is an abundance of 3D printer models on the market that all have different features and capabilities. One thing that they all have in common is that they need their nozzle changed regularly for peak performance. In this post, we will talk about how you can change your 3D Printer Nozzle.

What is a 3D printer nozzle ?

A nozzle is a mechanical device that controls the flow of molten material during printing. It does this by converting electrical signals into heat energy, which then melts and moves through the machine to create layers upon layers on your chosen object!

A nozzle can become clogged from any residue left behind due to the machine, or as a result of over-extrusion. This could lead to an uneven print surface and cause your printer to malfunction .

It also needs regular cleaning in order for it not only perform better but last longer as well.

How do I change the nozzle on my 3D printer ?

It varies depending on the type of nozzle. The most common, a PEEK or steel version has two screws that hold it in place. Remove these and then use pliers to loosen up the clamps holding down one side so you can slide out both pieces as shown.

If you have an extruded aluminum nozzle with hexagonal holes, remove the screw at either end using a hex key wrench (or similar) before loosening each clamp from around its base. Inspect your old component for any damage and discard if required. Slide the new nozzle into position and align it with its corresponding holes before tightening one screw at a time.

When should I change my 3d printer nozzle ?

It depends on your printer and the type of nozzle you have. For instance, if you print with standard PLA filament using a PEEK or steel version nozzle then it’s a good idea to change every 4-6 months.  Other times when you should consider changing is after printing abrasive materials such as nylon or metal filled filaments which can wear down nozzles more quickly than others

Changing your 3D Printer Nozzle is a simple process that will take no more than 30 minutes. The rewards are worth it, as you’ll have an improved print quality and faster printing speeds.
